Unspoken: Survivors Stories IV Virtual Exhibition
A virtual art exhibition in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
All the artists in this show have one thing in common. Their lives have been impacted by suicide and they responded to our call for art to raise awareness. They are incredibly strong, brave and willing to share their stories.
“This Art Exhibition, for me, is to share my story and to help any person that is going through a rough path that they’re not alone.” Judith Aram
Organized by Your Art Your Story, The Arizona Artists Guild and The Arizona Art Alliance, this virtual exhibit features 92 works of art by 42 artists from around the world. For the past 5 years, the exhibition partners have provided arts programs for suicide loss survivors at the Arizona Artists Guild Studio in North Phoenix. These ongoing programs are free and open to anyone who has been affected by the trauma of suicide. (To learn more about upcoming workshops, click here.)
If you or someone you know needs help, call 988 for the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You can also text HOME to 741741 for free, 24-hour support from the Crisis Text Line. Outside of the U.S., please visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention for a database of resources.
Visit Your Art Your Story’s website for resources in English and Spanish. (To see last years’ exhibit, click here).
Visit Arizona Artists Guild for the schedule.

I’m diagnosed with mental disabilities which greatly affect me with my depression. I am a survivor, and it is a constant battle with my thoughts. But I fight through it, I fight through it to help people of all ages who suffer in silence that they are not alone.
I am also a suicide survivor going on 2 years now. It’s still a struggle, especially with the sudden passing of my best friend, my best cousin, Yvette. Luckily, I had a good support team with my co-workers, my meds, my therapist, and my spouse that I was able to get through her memorial and each day after. To keep my mind busy and away from bad thoughts I work two jobs and draw in my spare time.

“Fulfillment of Forgiveness” began with a photocopy of my hand, reaching out, wanting to shake with another’s.
Offering and accepting forgiveness
Is a freeing act.
Multitudes of possibilities flow
Generously and intensely
Toward one another.
Endings are reopened to permit newfound
Avenues of expression and attainment.
Reestablished trust permits the conduction
Of energy that kindles bright sparks of wisdom
And love which all may grasp and grow on.
Forgiveness finds nourishment
As it rejects past mistakes,
To release ideas that meld Into beautiful newness:
The fulfillment of Forgiveness. – Baruch Koritan
(The inspiration for the artwork was a synagogue art show to be, called, “What does forgiveness look like?” I was hooked!)

“Moses struck the rock” is meant to show how the rock reacted to him. I’ve always felt that each rock has a story to tell if one listens with true caring. I lost my best friend to suicide, perhaps not listening between the lines or seeing the whole picture. I hope this painting of a supposedly inanimate object will open at least one person’s ears and eyes, even if it’s only for their own sake.

Gardening and Art have been activities that bring me peace regardless of the challenges. Serena was also an avid gardener earning a degree in Landscape Architecture and a second degree in Horticulture. We’d frequently garden together in both our entire yard and our community vegetable garden. She loved all flowers and we both liked lilies. After her death 12 years later I still plant lilies like “Serena Dancer” from lily growers. We both found peace working with plants and Mother Nature.

Just weeks before she ended her life in 2011 she and I worked together in our veggie garden. Her gardening head scarves remain on my car’s dashboard so I have her with me. This portrait of her was painted on one of the mugs I threw on the pottery wheel.

I like to spend quiet time sketching anything that comes from deep down without judgement; just draw. This drawing begins with her torn suicide note followed by freely drawn 8B pencil lines that I love. The lines started to walk until they stepped into a pair of shoes. The shoed lines walk away from her suicide note now crumbling onto the ground. I will survive is what I chose to do 12 years ago. I knew at the time of her death in 2011 I could fall into the proverbial rabbit hole; I would not!

The cuts and imperfections cut in the diamond form facets that hurt when they were cut in the past.
This was my first horse and well in my life from age 7 to 38, she lived a long life. Maiden, my best friend, an emotional outlet when I didn’t understand anything. Such a blessing this horse. I can’t thank her enough.

SOULJOURN : a soul on a spiritual journey; life as holy, wholly, and present
Which crown of thorns am I choosing to wear?
Recognize I have the power to choose
Thorns hide the transforming beautiful blooming
I pray for strength and courage to let those thorns go and release myself,
release old ideas beliefs habits and patterns.
The thorn must be removed for the flowers to bloom
Painful as it feels, his blessings are many
Faith. Release. Let go the thorns, they do not have to be there.
I get to choose.
I affirm blessings, grace, and miracles are happening.
These great times of change are growth opportunities and blessings!!!
Faith in not knowing is infinite possibility brewing.

Janna Blackburn is an Abstract Artist living in Maricopa, Arizona.
About her work, she says:”Learning to let go of things that no longer serve a higher part of myself is a new mantra I’ve begun to practice. Choosing to be purposeful in how I invest in myself has been invigorating to my overall wellbeing. I am a Fluid Artist who has begun branching out using other mediums, ink, charcoal, pastels, modeling paste. It’s been an amazingly wonderful progression of self-discovery. Fluid art and intuitive abstracts have helped me to identify a part of myself where it is okay to make mistakes, as mistakes may open a different direction. It has taught me to listen to my canvas, paints, and tools. My art journey has helped to heal parts of myself, emotionally and spiritually, as the canvas provides a space to express my voice. The paints provide a platform for self-expression, a focal point on the visual beauty that my surroundings have to offer.”

I came from a dark past, probably like any other creative mind. I started sketching since I was a little girl, but it was until High School where I learned Art discipline, mediums, and Graphic Design. My creativity started after my third Suicidal attempt at 17 years old. I had a supernatural experience. I can share it like it happened yesterday. And without any doubt tears will roll down my cheeks. Even though it was a long time ago, I felt the necessity to share my talents as a testimony of my sorrow, healing and the purpose of what I do. I’m here to be me, help others, and with so many life responsibilities I forget to do it so. The Art Exhibitions for me, is to share my story and to help any person that is going through a rough path that they’re not alone.

My son and only child, Alex, ended his life in March 2016, 10 days before his 27th birthday. “I make stuff because I get sad if I don’t” is my favorite t-shirt. I will always be sad that Alex died, but creating helps smooth the jagged edges of the hole in my soul he left me with. If I could change the shirt to “sadder if I don’t” it would be more accurate. I do art every day, but on significant days, like his birthday, his death day, Mother’s Day, my birthday or days when I feel especially horrible, I make tributes to him.
T A R is his initials, Thomas Alexander Reynolds. There are 3 pieces that make up that piece. The T was created the day after his death date in 2021 at my first Your Art Your Story online event (Aboriginal Dot Painting). The A was created on his birthday and the R was created on Mother’s Day, in that same year. The repetitive motion of dipping the tool in the paint then applying it to the board to make the dots is soothing.
Practicing art often has lessons I can apply to my life and surviving Alex’s unfinished life.

I do art every day, but on significant days, like his birthday, his death day, Mother’s Day, my birthday or days when I feel especially horrible, I make tributes to him.
The name of this piece, “You Didn’t Finish” has a dual meaning. About the time Alex was in his early teens, my current project was designing and making needlepoint coasters. He expressed an interest in doing one, so we rounded up some yarn scraps and he sewed the herringbone pattern in white at the top and the two burgundy rows next to that near the middle. He left the rest unfinished. He would have been 31 when I had a struggling day around Christmas. I came across the piece he started and the few scraps he had originally selected that were still in the baggie with it. I randomly decided how to arrange the colors, and was amazed how I intuitively created the lower pattern and the border so that there was only enough yarn of each color left over to anchor the yarn tail with an inch or less to spare. I didn’t plan any part of the piece in advance, just let the universe guide my next stitches and I think it turned out beautifully. I feel like that’s a good thing to remember. Practicing art often has lessons I can apply to my life and surviving Alex’s unfinished life.

I was touched by suicide when I was fifteen, experiencing the loss of a very close friend. The impact of this changed the trajectory of my life, affecting choices I made, relationships I forged, and most significantly, by the way it changed the way I felt in relation to the world around me. I instantly felt very old and had difficulty relating to people my own age. Fortunately, my love of art and painting gave me a powerful venue to express myself, especially during a time when talking about traumatic events was not commonplace. I believe this life experience later influenced and guided me towards becoming a therapist and developing a deeper understanding of myself and others. Sharing art and being open about the impact of suicide helps people understand that they are not alone and increases awareness to raise consciousness of suicide prevention.

I am a veteran and trauma survivor. I experienced a disconnect, from others, and within myself, and had fallen to the deepest depths. Fortunately, therapy, and support from organizations such as “Your Art Your Story” have been the healing catalyst moving my life forward. For me, art is the point of contact. Art has given me a sense of community, of shared emotions and experience. My canvas is a portal where I can open to others and make a connection. It is powerful, when we discover that we are not alone.

I have found artwork to be a wonderful creative outlet for me… it’s a really fantastic way to explore feelings and thoughts in a very safe way and the journey can take you along very many twists and turns – just like life!!!
Nobody ever knows what truly goes on behind closed doors and it’s a very sad world when abuse happens on a daily basis to innocent young people…
These monsters though have never overpowered the light that shines within me and even though they tried to snuff the flame out I have risen from the ashes like a phoenix ready to fly again…

Chippin’Away – Matthew’s Song
Digital Art from acrylic painting with silk flowers

I am an artist, and mother of two sons, also artists. I create art to express my feelings and commune with my creative side. My piece, “Chippin’ Away – Matthew’s Song” comes from the heart. Matthew was a young artist/actor who worked with my youngest son on Broadway and stayed with us at our home a while. He was lively and exuberant, a natural actor. Matthew struggled with depression but seemed to be hanging on. His first year in college, away from home, he went missing from the dorm one night and was later found deceased. Matthew had ended his pain. Sometimes, even surrounded by friends and family, a person can still feel alone. Stay in touch with friends and family. Know them! Love them! Be there!

This image is based on a photo taken of me in Hawaii way back in the early 1970s. I have always felt it was a good representation of my lifetime of isolation. And of my very strong connection to Nature. Nature is one of my Healers. Form very early childhood, I suffered many forms of isolation, trauma, pain, depression, loss, and suicide. It was during this time that I developed a very strong connection to Spirit in the Natural World and began daily working with many forms of Art and Creativity, Nature Fitness, Meditation, and Movement, all became very powerful therapies for me for working through the all things I have experienced as a person who has been primarily alone in this world. I turned to these things as a child for powerful healing and still do to this day.

I have been recovering from the loss of my life partner since 2020 and have been utilizing art as an outlet for healing. I went on a pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash at the beginning of August and took some photographs of the natural beauty I experienced while I was there. I hope my contribution to this art show brings someone, somewhere, at the very least, a moment of peace.

My desire and need to express myself through the visual arts has been ongoing throughout my life. So far, the expressions have appeared in many mediums and forms, everything from photography to painting, needlework to cooking. My latest explorations have been acrylic paint, watercolors, life drawing in conte and pencil, printmaking and more. I have enjoyed teaching students about art forms, and unofficially, I have worked with adults as well. I believe expressing oneself through the arts is a critical component of everyone ‘s being, which is a good part of my reasons to share, to recognize the need in others to tell their story.

The Guarded Heart
discarded sneakers scraps from other sculptures, thread, findings and glass dome
11.5 x 6 x 6
$875.00
The work included in this exhibition are from the Sneaker Sculpture body of work that has been ongoing for over twenty years. Both Sneaker Sculptures are hand sewn and embroidered from discarded sneakers pulled from the trash. The first is from the “Have a Heart Series” and is titled “The Guarded Heart”. It is reflective of the state of my heart since my brother and stepfather’s consecutive suicides in 1996. This was during my sophomore and junior years of college. The result of their deaths was the end of my college dream. Abruptly changing my mindset, perspective and how I was able to love for the rest of my life. Some 27 years later the meditative practice of deconstructing and reconstructing my Sneaker Sculptures has saved my life.
“Death State” is a self portrait of sorts. This piece reflects the light (hope) the eyes can see yet the bound mouth shows the reluctance to relate to what my experience was. The embroidery symbolizes events along the way, the little deaths. The turning of pages along the way that felt bigger because of this two losses I experienced so early. I mention these two suicides in my artist statement on my website because they are the most impactful incidents that tend to over shadow most of my life. This is the only place I openly talk about this in reference to my work or my person. “Death State” is from my “Obsession with Death Series” that explores the fascination ancient and present day cultures have had with death.

I lost my brother, as well as a very good friend of mine, in the same summer and each chose suicide. The loss, and the feelings surrounding their absence, continues thereafter. It leaves a void of “without you” I use are in many ways and it brings me great joy. I honor those who have passed before me by painting beautiful, colorful scenes that I hope bring- happiness to everyone. That art sometimes is fueled by my feelings of loss and painting lifts me up and keeps me going.

My art, as a survivor’s testament, strives to forge a new narrative—a narrative where compassion and empathy thrive, where stigma dissolves in the face of understanding. Through the strokes of my brush, I envision a future where mental health discussions are met with open hearts and open minds. My paintings serve as a catalyst, propelling us towards a brighter landscape for mental health, dismantling barriers, fostering healing, and resurrecting a society that truly values emotional well-being above all else.

In my art, I explore the intricate dance of forgiveness, capturing the profound journey of both being forgiven and forgiving. One image portrays the delicate moment of being forgiven, where imperfections are met with compassion and wounds begin to heal. In another, I delve into the transformative act of forgiving, revealing our capacity for empathy and love. This exploration highlights the beautiful harmony that arises when these two acts converge, offering a moment of profound connection and transformation. Through my work, I invite you to contemplate the interplay of vulnerability, empathy, and liberation that forgiveness embodies, ultimately leading us towards self-redemption.

When my son Yoshi took his life at 19 years and 25 days of age, everything that was orderly and predictable shattered into a trillion shards. This mandala shows the result of almost seven years of surviving and actively working to figure out who I am now with Yoshi not physically here with me. The center heart is made of layers of me and Yoshi together, with the flames representing my heart’s fire rekindling itself after being snuffed out. It is difficult to build a flame when daily life is flooded with tears and the deepest sorrows. The tears blend with the fire over time to nurture seeds of life and hope, growing from Yoshi and my hearts. Vines of love, with thorns made from fire, grow with the nourishment of tears and forever loss. Stoking the fire from our hearts, embracing the forever-tears, eventually new life grows, old snuffed out life regrows. The dashed lines merge Yoshi and my continued love with the forever grief and loss pain, spreading outwards.

I believe artmaking is our birthright and is as essential as breathing, sleeping, eating nutritious food, and exercise. I know that when I am actively engaged in making art, I meet stress with ease and am more centered. This is why I have been part of the Outreach Programs at Arizona Artists Guild and Arizona Art Alliance, and partnered with Your Art Your Story. I have experienced firsthand the benefits of making and beholding art and want to share that with others, particularly those who have experienced trauma. I benefit from organizing and facilitating these classes as much as those who participate. From these classes, I have embraced play in a deeper way. Art is about the process and the expression. The two books in this virtual exhibition are a result of ‘play’. Unexpectedly, the making of the botanical prints allowed me to immerse myself in nature during Arizona’s record-breaking heat. Nature provides refuge and nourishment for my soul.
I live an examined life. My studio is a place to excavate human emotions and the archetypal energies of human nature and explore the imbalance between the complex machinations of the inner world of our thoughts, and the outer world in which we are seen. In that regard, my work is metaphoric and biographical.
Tess Mosko Scherer’s art career spans 40-years; gallerist, artist, coach, and advocate. In addition to her studio practice, she built a private practice coaching and mentoring artists, and facilitates art workshops for Veterans and other trauma survivors. These diverse groups have had positive outcomes participating in group leisure-arts activities. She has received several grants including a research grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to study the impact of a leisure arts program on veterans’ cognition, mood, and sociability. The two-year study was conducted at Paradise Valley Community College along with co-investigators, David Lloyd Bradley, Dr. Caron Sada and Dr. Lisa Wayman. The team co-authored “Open Me Up!”, a book of art prompts.
Additionally, she sits on the advisory board for the World Academy for the Future of Women and facilitates programs on leadership in China and Bangladesh. While in China, she facilitated over 20 art programs in rural villages. Since 2019, she has served as the Executive Director of the Arizona Art Alliance, mentoring the leadership of Arizona arts organizations, hosting exhibitions for their membership, organizes outreach programs, and facilitates workshops for professional development. Her artwork is represented by Van Gogh’s Ear Gallery, Prescott. Mosko Scherer was named one of the ‘100 Creatives You Need to Know’ by the Phoenix New Times. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her artist husband on their urban farm with their furry, feathered, and finned family.

These three works are demonstration pieces from the March and July 2023 Community Outreach Program art classes held at Arizona Artists Guild I instructed. I co-founded this program in June 2013. Each month I have either instructed, or provided instructional support for the instructor.
The value I place on these classes is hard to calculate. They are very important to me because it is my opportunity to share with others, the skills, and experiences I have gained over a lifetime of artmaking.
Being an artist is not a job, it is a lifestyle, a career, a way of being.
Over the years of this program I have observed the profound benefits derived from these classes by the participants. These include, but are not limited to, lessened dependence on prescription medications for pain, decreased anxiety in public spaces, and with other people, increased confidence in their abilities to be creative, abilities to communicate with others, and increased ability to contribute to society.
Art is an amazing aspect of humanity, and the benefits derived from it are incalculable.

My son died by suicide, and I lost 2 other family members to suicide. I know that I can’t change the past, but I want to understand why so many people around me chose death and if there was anything that I could have done differently. Creativity is one of my outlets to explore these unseen worlds. I focus on my own self care and supporting an organization called Your Art Your Story, which I founded in honor of my son. Your Art Your Story supports suicide loss survivors through art and community.
Although I started Your Art Your Story with a mission to help others, it has been powerfully healing for myself. I’ve benefited from meeting so many wonderful people at classes, meetings, conferences and exhibits, and many have been through similar circumstances and shared their experiences with me. Through our conversations and sharing, you all have helped me more than you know. https://www.yourartyourstory.org
