Meet the Juror…
Heidi Dauphin
Heidi Dauphin is a mixed media/ceramic artist, born in 1970 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned an MFA in 2001 and BFA in 1992 from the University of Michigan. Heidi’s career began as a high school art teacher in Michigan and followed by working as a gallerist in Massachusetts. Moving to Phoenix in 2004, Heidi focused on art making and has completed several large-scale Public Art Projects, including the Valley Metro Light Rail, City of Phoenix, and the City of Avondale. She is also the Exhibitions Manager at Shemer Art Center.
Between public art projects, Heidi concentrates on her studio practice. She is a collector of memories, objects, and places: all affecting her work. Throughout her career, she has completed three yearlong art projects (2000, 2010, 2020) that involved making art and collecting every day for a year. Heidi feels this ritual is essential to her art making process.

David Knorr is expressing his artistic voice through biomorphic sculptures. David shares his inspiration from organic abstractions that emulate in nature. Many of the Hoodoo’s found in the Southwest United States are created by volcanic and erosive action. He is inspired by the wonderful positive and negative spaces, and these elements are blended into his sculptures for the viewers to channel their subconscious and let the poetic forms speak for themselves. David enjoys working with Clay, Wood and Stone. He finds these materials to be fluid and provide visual and tactile surfaces for his expressive works. He invites viewers to carefully touch and caress the surfaces as they explore the sensuality of the art. The art is better understood when using the sense of vision and touch to explore the positive and negative spaces. There are nuances that reveal themselves to those who take the time to appreciate the form and surface.
Born in Albion Michigan, and studied art at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo Michigan. David received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture, with a minor in Ceramics. David currently resides in Sun City, Arizona. David is actively involved with the Five15Arts @ Chartreuse collective, Arizona Clay Club, and the Arizona Artist Guild. David has received numerous awards and recognition. David exhibits regularly at the Five15Arts @ Chartreuse and other regional competition and invitational shows. David is an interdisciplinary artist working with Glass, Ceramics, Wood, and Stone. David’s inspiration comes from travels, nature, and from places like the Mayan temples, the Chiricahua Mountains, Monument Valley and Kew Gardens, and the list goes on. He is inspired by the shapes, the colors, the movement, and the feelings felt while engaging all the great spaces. He conveys the richness of shape, color, and texture into the works of art, and shares the boldness of his experiences into the work for others to engage.

My art is an outward realization of personal healing. I find inspiration in Picasso, Matisse, Franz Marc, Rosa Bonheur, Fred Stone. I focus on horse personalities to express life experiences from tragedy to deep inner peace. Every horse that I’ve ridden has kept me alive and given me strength to face my shadows with calm courage and intuitive wisdom. My newest work includes figures to explore concepts of trust and faith in humanity.
I was born California, graduated from Sonoma State University. From childhood pets and 25 years of competitive horseback riding, I have always maintained deep animal connections and passions. My most inspirational work was in the field of therapeutic riding and teaching people with special needs. I relocated to Mesa, Arizona in 2017 to pursue master’s degree. Through a series of life altering events, I reconnected spiritually with painting nature and the animals around me.

Judy Wegenast I have been actively painting for more than 25 years. My painting skills have developed through participation in art classes, workshops, and mentorships. Art is a never-ending research project for me. Much of my work comes from the ability to take what I have learned to develop my own style. My primary mediums are pastels and oils. I try to challenge myself with each new painting by incorporating new techniques into my unique style. I use color and a strong sense of design whether I am creating a figurative piece, a colorful floral or a vibrant wildlife painting. “I can’t imagine doing a painting without an animal, bird, or people in it. It has been a constant theme in my art, and it is foremost in my mind.” My work is best seen in person, as a photo presents only a midpoint in the dichotomy between realism and expressionism. I find my inspiration is defined by nature whether I’m working with resin, fused glass or other media and to me, there’s nothing more beautiful than an Arizona sunset or more moving than a covey of quail running across the desert. I aim to create the depth and hypnotic spectacles of the different landscapes and creatures by channeling the awe-inspiring scenes from the natural world. My art is about feelings and emotion and each piece mesmerizes and captivates the viewer through the intrinsic weavings of the colors as they intersperse with each other and uplift the imagination and spirit. The facial expressions of those who view my art is assurance that I have succeeded in capturing inspirational pieces of nature’s beauty and the enjoyment I receive in being able to create works of art which evoke such happiness in people fills me with gratitude and drives me to continue my artistic journey.

Born in Tucson. Spent most of my life in the seven western states. Always amazed by the Native American artists in areas where I lived. Moved back to phoenix after retiring from 10 years as a civilian in USAF. Make my living now as an artist who uses wood, wood burning and India ink to try and imitate Native American baskets, vessels and platters.

I have a passion (bordering on obsession) with art and especially portrait art. My preference leans more toward contemporary / abstract / expressionistic styles. I love trying different techniques for my pieces and find that my art often reflects my mood of the moment. When creating art, I find that everything in daily life just slips away from thought while I immerse myself in the creative process and enjoyment of handling the materials and challenging myself to create something from my imagination. My usual mediums are acrylic paint, mixed media collage and digital art. I like to build up layers within the work to give the piece depth and interest both from a distance and close-up. My work can be emotional, dark, sad, fun or whimsical. Each new piece is an adventure.
Donna Ceraulo has had a life-long passion for art. Born in 1962 in St. Louis, Missouri, her first introduction to painting was in High School in Phoenix, Arizona in 1977 where she developed an intense love of the Impressionists. Although her career was not in Art, she attended Art History classes in Junior College while working and raising a family. Donna has toured many of the world’s finest art museums and has participated in many art workshops taught by fine artists. Donna began selling her artwork in 2017 after creating a separate art studio in her home in Phoenix. Donna was awarded juried artist status with Arizona Artist Guild in 2022. Donna believes in the self-healing and nurturing benefits of a creative life. “ART enables us to FIND ourselves and LOSE ourselves at the same time.” (Thomas Merton) Donna has three grown children, two grandchildren and a boxer dog. She is an animal lover, an avid reader and loves nothing more than painting with her dog at her feet and listening to music or an audio book.

I am a mixed media artist. My work is typically multi-layered with collaged elements, heavily textured, brightly colored, and non-representational. Most of my paintings include hidden signs, symbols, and words that reflect an inner dialogue about the piece that is rarely evident at first glance. These hidden elements represent cultural artifacts, artistically expressed.

My current assemblage and collage feature ancient imagery, symbols and petroglyphs. Creating thought provoking visual narratives by looking back to ancient language and rituals can establish interesting links to our present experience. My work was recently exhibited at the 11th Annual Arizona Artist Guild Statewide Exhibition in 2022 and the Arizona Artist Guild Winter Exhibition, 2022.
I create art in the North Phoenix Sonoran desert, exploring many varieties of media and enjoying the artistic journey. My recent explorations include acrylic, assemblage, drawing, photography and photographic weaving. Combining my New York metro experiences with new Phoenix sensibilities can produce interesting results, sometimes with an offbeat subject matter. My fine arts degrees from Rutgers University and studies at Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design in New York also shape and influence my current art explorations.

I love to create art in many forms, especially watercolor. My subjects can be whatever I’m in the mood to paint. I’ve been doing mixed media lately using cement, it’s dyes, and soft pastels. Anything to experiment with and always want to create.
My interests have always been in drawing, calligraphy, painting using different mediums. My notoriety is always related to the art fields, from Calligraphy, the cake decorating, such as wedding, or decorated icing to match the party theme, and teaching classes in arts and crafts. My intentions was home economics, sewing, family life, sports and leadership skills whether in community or church. Fear has never been a factor and eager to learn and do more to improve and understand more. I belongs to 6-8 groups in the artist world and enjoy it all.

Painting to create an object that hasn’t existed before is most important My techniques start on canvas using acrylic and oil paints with very little pre-planning. Digging deep intuitively, recalling memories and impressions from my present life, I coax hints of reality from the non-objective abstract backgrounds.
In 1995 I retired from Nursing and completed my Masters in Studio Art. We moved to the southwest from MN and I have a studio in Ground Floor Artists where I paint, exhibit and sell my work. Being a wife, mother to three sons and a grandmother to four makes my life full and blessed.

Bachelor of Arts Union College, Schenectady, NY Master of Arts State University of New York at Albany Doctor of Education State University of New York at Albany Professional Experience High School English teacher Franklin Square, NY District Language Arts Supervisor Orangeburg, NY Middle School Principal Dalton, MA Bronx Community College New York, NY State University College Brockport, NY Virginia Tech University Blacksburg, VA Arizona State University Phoenix, AZ Art Education Experiences In 2002, I took an adult education course at Glendale Community College with Lloyd Littlepage and began painting. Since then, I have worked with John Nelson and Jon Haddock at Phoenix College where my work has received prizes and been recognized by such artists as Eric Fischl and Mark Bradford. I am a regular at the Arizona Art Guild’s Life Drawing sessions. I often work with Edna Dapo at the Phoenix Center for the Arts. I was honored to be a member of the Artery Gallery Collective where I had the opportunity to show my work on a regular basis. As a person who entered painting relatively late in life, I have worked very hard to catch up. In addition to the classes, I have visited as much great art around the world as time and money would allow—Prado, Tate, National Gallery, Louvre, Chicago Art Institute, Los Angeles Modern Art, Metropolitan Art and more. In the classic method, I painted studies of specific artists’ works—Hopper, Nutt, O’Keefe and others. But mainly, I have painted. My mentor John Dewey said that we learn “by doing”—and that’s how I taught others and taught others to teach. I never believed that I was an exception to the rule. In short, I am a retired teacher, now an artist, who loves America. Unlike many members of my generation—the “silent generation”—I have always tried to be a squeaky wheel and remind those around me to identify and, ultimately, work to solve growing problems. In the classroom, I worked to teach my students how to fix those problems. As an artist, my medium is different but my mission probably hasn’t changed that much. Each painting is a narrative that focuses on some facet of the contemporary American experience. In total, my work attempts to sustain us to continue the unfinished business of creating America. Exhibitions In addition to the Artery Gallery, I have been fortunate to have my work shown at following: 2014-16 Fischl Gallery at Phoenix College (1st, 2nd and 3rd)* 2014-16 Phoenix Art Museum (as a (Phoenix College Student Art Competition winner)* 2015-19 Glendale Fine Arts Competition* 2010-16 Mesa Art Center 2018 United Universalist Church 2019 Holland Gallery* 2019 Ice House Gallery 2019 Devonshire Senior Center 2019-Present Arizona Artist Guild * (Multiple shows) 2019 Arizona Statewide Competition in Surprise* 2019 Phoenix Center for the Arts (Best in Show)* 2019 Arizona State Fair* 2020 High Street Art 2021 First Studio 2022 Found:RE 2022 Arizona Art Alliance Statewide Exhibition Peoria Art Museum 2022 Flinn Foundation* 2022 Artlink 22nd Annual Juried Exhibition 2023 Arizona Alliance (2nd Place) *Juried Affiliations Arizona Artists Guild (Juried Member) Phoenix Center for the Arts Phoenix Artlink

I paint because I enjoy intensely exercising my creativity and spontaneity. I start by making a mark on blank canvas. The process that follows is a series of thoughtful and intuitive responses based on the previous marks, until the painting feels complete. The intent is a non-representational composition of rhythm, lines, forms, colors… that expresses the energy or spirit of the moments of creating and affords the viewer to enjoy the piece on many levels.

I paint what appeals to me and change my working method to suit the subject matter. Currently I am back to working in watercolor, which is the medium that started my art journey. This work is very meditative and I can get immersed in it mentally. Art involves a lot of problem solving which I find stimulating.
A member of Arizona Artists Guild, Mountain Artists Guild, Arizona Watercolor Association and Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona, Melanie Harman has been living and working in Arizona since 1987. For several years she was Senior Center Chair for AAG, organising member shows at the Beatitudes Campus and Devonshire Senior Center. She also was treasurer for AWA and is currently Membership Chair for CWA. Originally from England, she is now a US citizen and enjoys hiking and travel.

I like painting with watercolor. It keeps you from getting too serious. About the time you think you are accomplishing something, the watercolor takes over and does its own thing. It’s a fun medium.
Pat Beans spent the first part of her life raising four children and working to build a business with her husband. When she was able to retire, she took off in the art world, taking classes, workshops, going on painting trip workshops. Her world exploded with color. Now, at age 93, she may be a little slower and unable to do many of the things she would like to be doing, but she is still enjoying the art world. With her faith and sense of humor, you never know what she will be painting next.

I have been exploring new styles and techniques in oil painting. This has been a very challenging I have been researching the different subjects and landscapes of our area. I like to focus on the personality of the subject, painting close up and personal, revealing both its beauty and it’s flaws. The introduction of colors, textures and content has been a great source of inspiration. I love this subject because of the contradiction it represents. I paint the luscious beauty of the flower versus the hazards of the land, and how they are in conflict with each other.
After I retired from a career of teaching art, I wanted to take this opportunity to actually create for myself. As a teacher, one wants to give their students their voice, creativity and the tools they will need to achieve this. Now it is my turn. So, I’ve completed southwestern sketches, painted and taken photographs of new environment for the purpose of learning more about it. I have experienced rodeos, ranches, truck cemeteries, western towns and walked through old graveyards. I fell in love with the western scenery and events that are truly unique and I want to explore more.

The art I paint embodies the essence of the Southwest. Color, light, shadow, adroit composition, and depiction of different surface textures are used to create unique paintings. I strive to provide the viewer a powerful experience through each painting by creating a lasting inspiration, sense of wonder and exploration of what the American Southwest once was and is today.
Sharon’s deep affection for art began at an early age. Sharon’s childhood years in rural New Mexico greatly influenced her art. The mining camp Sharon lived in was adjacent to historic Highway 66. A rural school provided education for the children in the mining camp, the local community and Navajo tribe living in the district. At school Sharon’s interest in the Navajo culture and way of life grew as she established friendships with the children. Hernly also met some Puebloan Native Americans in the area which provided the opportunity to visit pueblos. Sharon traveled extensively throughout the Southwest visiting landmarks, ruins and ghost towns. Sharon developed a love of the land and its history which she shows in her artwork. She lives in Arizona.

My work is channeled. This painting and my others are about the state of our world and nature. These paintings are minimal, surreal landscapes. Each of my paintings have a poem with a message for humanity.
Shelley Lowell, an award-winning visual artist, graphic designer and poet, graduated Pratt Institute with a BFA in Advertising Design & Visual Communications. Her art and poetry express her feelings and thoughts about life. Originally from New York City, she relocated to Arizona in 2022. Her early artwork earned her the label of NYC Feminist Artist in the 1970s. Her artwork has evolved over 5 decades, however, it has always been about social commentary.

As a painter, my work is focused on the exploration of blurred imagery. Through the use of various techniques such as Gaussian, motion, and radial blurs, I aim to create a sense of movement and fluidity in my paintings. Working with acrylic on canvas and linen, I am drawn to the versatility of this medium and the way it allows me to experiment with texture and layering. My interest in blurred imagery stems from a fascination with the way it can distort and abstract the world around us. By intentionally blurring my compositions, I am able to create a sense of uncertainty and ambiguity, inviting the viewer to engage with the work on a deeper level and interpret the image in their own way. My goal as an artist is to create thought-provoking and visually striking paintings that challenge the viewer’s perception and encourage them to consider the world in a different light. Through the use of blurred imagery and a contemporary approach, I hope to engage the viewer in a dialogue about the nature of reality and the ways in which we perceive and interpret the world around us. So, my paintings are a reflection of my artistic vision and my commitment to creating meaningful and impactful works of art.
Born 1954 in Santa Monica, California. Graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Graphic Design. Started entering juried art shows in 1986 to present. Moved to Arizona in 2004 and retired in 2014 as a professional model maker. Now I just make art, care for my dogs and enjoy the day.

Digging deep intuitively, recalling memories and impressions from my present life, I coax hints of reality from the non-objective abstract background. Painting an object that hasn’t existed before is most important. When opportunities to exhibit what has been created it is always an honor.
After retiring from a career in nursing I delved enthusiastically into a career in the visual arts. In 2002 I completed my Masters in Studio Art and since then have been a full-time artist working in many mediums.
