Rhonda Prisby, painter: My subject matter is imagination. As a small child, characters and concepts would come to mind that I would then attempt to materialize on paper. As an adult, my imagination has expanded to include concepts that convey a social message. My goal is to inspire others to tap into their creativity and discover facets of humanity through my imagery.

I was born in Warren, Ohio, U.S.A. I work primarily in oil but have developed a recent interest in mixed media art. I also enjoy sculpting with clay. I love many styles of painting and am mostly influenced by concepts from my imagination. I obtained a Bachelor of Art in Studio Art from Hiram College, OH. After pursuing and working in another career, my love for art led me to pick up the brushes again. Over the past 10 years, I have been building an art career. I exhibit in local art shows in the DFW area and recently won second place in the painting category at the 2024 Myrtle Knox Memorial Juried Art Show in Grand Prairie, TX. I currently work in Fort Worth, TX.

Ceramics is more than a medium—it is a conversation between form, function, and the rhythm of everyday life. Clay possesses an unparalleled flexibility, allowing me to shape ideas into objects that seamlessly integrate into human experience. My work is designed to be touched and to be part of a personal space or daily ritual. With a sculptural eye, I approach each creation as an exploration of space and structure. In my practice, I seek to distill natural rhythms into the surfaces and forms of my ceramics. Whether shaping functional vessels or sculptural pieces, I strive to honor the interplay between material and movement, permanence and impermanence.

Robert has been involved in art since before he could write. As a very young child, his mother provided him with pencil and paper to keep his hands occupied. Although he had a successful career in marketing and later interior design, art remained a constant presence. He regularly took classes and entered art shows, maintaining his connection to his artistic side. Previously focused more on acrylic and mixed media painting, he expanded into ceramics during the pandemic, developing a keen interest in hand building. He enjoys transforming clay into various forms, whether useful, aesthetically pleasing, or thought-provoking. He has created a ceramic style that incorporates sculptural, modern, and organic elements.

This series uses minimalism to send blunt messages. What Goes Around Comes Around is a message every politician should adhere too. Send lies, untruths, anger out and it will come back. Bleeding Ideals reflects the stupidity of violence for politics and the trail of blood and death it left on the capital police. The day the capital was stormed was a dark day and inspired this piece. I want politics for people, not a few; thus, Compromise for the People. Much of my art relates to my perception of social issues. My series of fiber art uses minimalism to provide focus. Messages are sent to the viewer and have been inspired from my experience as a victim, as a patient, and as a citizen. The art hopefully inspires to think twice before speaking or acting. The Cybertruck is a symbol of Trump/Musk America in 2025; masculine but not strong, burning to the ground instead of moving forward, obsessed with destroying gender expression after years of society opening up and embracing the LGBTQ+ community. When one man has seized so much power to rapidly disempower so many, we must symbolically burn down the structures that make this possible.

Stacy Holmstedt is a mosaic artist and painter who has been creating since the age of three. Her high-chroma work typically focuses on the color and vibrance of life in Arizona.

My mission is to tell the stories of bold and outstanding women spanning the start of ourAmerican history up to present day through the use of narrative portraiture and various mediums — women who through their passion, empathy, courage, integrity, and determination helped to better the lives of women in their communities. This is only 3 portraits in a body of 17 and all the narratives are about women who touched me personally and deeply …ordinary women who rose to the occasion to right the wrongs, transcend the moment, and improve our nation. (Credit is given to Lainey Prather for her collaboration on the Gabby Giffords portrait).

Troublesome current events called Suzanne Whitaker to create the body of work, Noteworthy American Women, partially funded by the Arizona Commission on the Arts. She returned to her fine arts roots (after many years in business as a muralist) and began creating portraits to tell women’s stories, overlooked accounts both in history and present day. (To see all of the portraits: www.noteworthyamericanwomen.com). Suzanne Whitaker is from Cincinnati, Ohio and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the School of Art, University of Cincinnati. She originally started her mural business in Cincinnati in 1993, concentrating on painting mostly for babies’ nurseries and children’s rooms. She then moved her family and her business to Phoenix in late 2005. And, shortly thereafter, published her book, Creative Kids’ Murals You Can Paint!, a helpful step-by-step guide in mural painting for parents, amateurs, and professionals alike. She continued as a mural painter for residential and commercial clients and then began developing her skills as a Decorative Wall Finisher (paint and plaster), often working with many Arizona Interior Designers. She has been in business for 32 years and still loves co-creating with designers and homeowners. Suzanne is an Illustrator too. She has illustrated for magazines and newspapers and created warm depictions of animals in children’s books: Lilly and Zander, What If I Try?, and What If I Can’t Hear?.

American Symbol of Freedom

Tim Morrison “1) “”American Symbol of Freedom””- The long admired and beloved American bald eagle, once the symbol of freedom to the entire world, is now carrying the message of “Distress and Extreme Danger.” We are in unparalleled times of a threatened Democracy. “First they came for the (____________fill in the space) and I did not speak out- because I was not a (_________)……….. Then they came for me- and there was no one left to speak for me.”The picture reflects on the current threats to democratic values and includes a poignant message about the consequences of silence in the face of injustice, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against oppression

Tim Morrison was born in Omaha, Nebraska in May of 1953. In 1959 the family moved to Phoenix and he graduated from Alhambra High School in 1971. It was here, the artistic seed was planted. A variety of Art classes were taken each of his four years. Following High School, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy where he spent two years majoring in Business. In 1975 he graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Business/Real Estate. He spent his entire professional career as a commercial real estate appraiser beginning in 1974. A 65-year resident of the Valley, he has also been an active member of the community serving on the boards of the Men’s Art Council, Luke’s Men, Valley of the Sun Kiwanis, and Ktizo United Church of Christ. He is currently a member of the Phoenix Artists Guild and has sold numerous pieces of art at local art shows. It was during his years with the Men’s Art Council at the Phoenix Art Museum that his interest in art was reignited. As the venue for the Cowboy Artists (CA) annual show, these incredible artists such as Howard Terpning, Joe Beeler, John Hampton, Kenneth Riley, Bill Nebeker, and Ray Swanson, (to mention only a few) were an inspiration. It wasn’t until retirement (and a son Brett expressing his own artistic ability) that he was motivated to start drawing again. Art has become a meditative and calming presence in their lives, and it is with these intentions that this art has been created.

Reality has become synthesized and blurred. We spend more than a quarter of our lives in artificial social systems viewing computer driven images. Everything we do is through language and technology is an AI language that is moving so fast we no longer have a grip on time. It obfuscates imagery and words (what is knowable) which upends governing systems and prevents us from compromising on anything. My art is a reflection of that blurred uncompromising reality.

Born in Santa Monica, California. Graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Graphic Design. Worked in art related fields such as printing, toy design and architectural model making. Started exhibiting artwork in 1986 in both juried shows and galleries across the country. Moved to Arizona in 2004.

As an artist, designer, and writer, I create work which reflects my need for discovery, mystery, beauty, and humor. Fresh perspectives, literal, symbolic, and metaphorical, provide my raw material. Far beyond initial exposure, creative output can (and should!) continue to engage the intellect and aesthetic.

With few exceptions, my creativity lies at the intersection of intention and intervention. Unplanned inputs—epiphany, accident, or a bright, shiny object—are evaluated, and incorporated as appropriate. Therefore, problem-solving is a crucial skill. As is patience, allowing me time to discover the next step.

It’s heartbreaking to witness the current state of our nation. The gravity of the situation weighs heavily, leaving me feeling helpless yet yearning to act. My art becomes my voice, a way to question what is, ignite understanding, and push for a better future. I believe in art’s potent ability to spark social change and offer solace in troubled times.

Val’s journey spans the worlds of fine art, design, and performance. With a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Florida Atlantic University, a Bachelor of Interior Design from Louisiana State University, and a Master’s Degree in Design from Arizona State University, she brings a unique perspective to her artistic practice. For over two decades, Valerie practiced as an interior designer, working with prestigious clients like Motorola, Kodak, and American Airlines. However, her passion for artistic expression led her back to academia, where she has shared her knowledge with students for over 30 years. She has held faculty positions at institutions like The Art Institute of Phoenix and Arizona State University, along with Palm Beach and Maricopa County Community Colleges.Today, Valerie is a dedicated artist. Her work draws on her diverse skill set, seamlessly blending sculpture, painting, performance, and design elements. This current chapter is fueled by the knowledge and inspiration she gained from extensive post-graduate studies at ASU.

Bold statements and imagery are the focus of my fiber artworks, which give voice to my anger and frustration. These alarming times of fascism’s rise in America remind me of the French Revolution, and how the people will not stand for an oligarchy, or dictatorship. It is the dawn of a new age that does not find its value with capitalism at the expense of humanity.

All for Onesie and Onesie for All” repurposes discarded or flawed American flag patches to confront the contradictions between the ideals the flag represents and the current state of our nation. While the American flag is meant to symbolize freedom, equality, and unity, this work exposes how those values are often compromised—especially in times of political unrest, systemic injustice, and growing division. By constructing an infant onesie from these imperfect emblems, the piece underscores a powerful truth: we are all born equal, before society imposes its hierarchies and prejudices. The onesie becomes both a symbol of innocence and a call to return to our foundational principles—reminding us that resistance begins with reclaiming the promise of equality for every individual in a fractured democracy.

Denise Yaghmourian is a fiber artist who works with fabric, thread, and unconventional materials like hook and eye tape. Rooted in traditional sewing techniques, her practice explores repetition, structure, and the emotional resonance of cloth through layered color and intricate hand-stitching. Influenced by her grandmother’s sewing room and the meditative minimalism of artists like Agnes Martin, Yaghmourian approaches making as a contemplative, process-based act.

Through the news, papers and social media it is easy to be consumed by the dark stench that seems to have shadowed our great democracy. If not careful, we can carry the stains into our homes and the odor can permeate our beings. Our own light may become dimmer by the weight of it all. I try to challenge that daily and wash the stains of this presidential mockery from my worries and search for greater things. As I challenge myself, I hope to spur on the viewers of this piece to do the same…Don’t fade, don’t shy away, because even the tiniest of candles is a bright spot in the night. Shine bright! ”

Currently, I live a reclusive life at the foot of the Grand Mesa in Delta County, Colorado. I live off grid in a partially subterranean straw bale home powered fully by sustainable energies, both solar and wind. Only recently have I turned my attention to the dabbling’s of my youth, considering the creative passions that run through me as the sustainability of my being. I have always been creative, problem solving in business, then in designing and building my home. My art has mostly been a private event, something I did for me, for expressing or decorating or stress relief. And I am now addicted to the rattle of the aerosol can. ” -Indigo

My personal public mural art is very political, with themes such as gun violence, voting rights, environmental justice, water rights, incarceration, and immigration reform. I believe the Public Artist has a responsibility when creating art for the public, which is to provide engagement in conversational debate, live at the mural site. As an audio engineer for the Lower East Side’s defiant Pirate Radio Station operated out of a squat, I was part of a movement of free speech advocates which led me to being the audio engineer for Pacifica Radio, and WBAI/FM, a true listener-supported radio station. I am proud to say I was arrested and went to jail for being in the first protest against the St. Patrick’s Day Parade when LQBTQ+ marchers were prohibited from participating. When you use your art to make a statement, you can’t be censored.

Jeremie bacpac Franko is a professional aerosol muralist from New York City, an emerging 3-D modeling digital artist, fashion designer and a scenic artist, painting sets and backdrops for major feature film studios in L.A., and designed buildings as a young architectural designer in New York City. Bacpac has a BA in Industrial Design from Carnegie Mellon and an Hons. Diploma from The Architectural Association of London. She was the guitarist for the English feminist punk-band The Raincoats during the punk years in the UK, only now being recognized as a band using music as resistance. My artwork tends to travel from one subject to another and from one media to another. I love the intuitive process of painting and drawing. Initially I used printmaking to make multiples of my drawings. But after the initial thrill, I found that it was much more interesting to think about image and content. The invention of the printing press revolutionized the visual arts by democratizing access to art and made it possible to mass produces images. Relief prints have long been used as a tool for political messages. These three relief prints have been done over several years reflecting my view of current events.

Marlys Kubicek was born in Lincoln, Illinois. Then at the age of 12 she arrived in Phoenix, Arizona. She did all the typical things: public grammar, public high school, and college. Her parents decided that she should study to be an art teacher and minor in biology. Then if she wanted to further her education study to be a medical illustrator. Instead, she got the degree, married, and had a family. She continued her studies. At Arizona State University discovered printmaking. Twenty-five years later she returned to the University of Arizona to receive a MFA in drawing and painting. (she also continued with printmaking on her paintings). When she inherited a house, she set up a studio, bought a press, and was juried into a collective gallery. The experiments are continuing.

“Clay is a wonderful medium: forgiving, therapeutic, and magically transformed by heat and glaze. For me, sculpting bypasses any purposeful thinking. I visualize a shape, and minutes or hours or days later that shape has manifested in clay; it’s directly eyes to fingers, and it’s magic. Daydreaming is a key part of the process.

Each of my wall pieces is comprised of several parts, and final assembly is often challenging. The entire process, from working with raw clay to installing finished pieces in customers’ homes, is totally fulfilling and more than a bit addictive!

My artwork can be seen at the Fountain Hills Artists’ Gallery, as well as at art shows around the valley during the winter.

Leslie Kiefus finds the process of transforming raw clay into beautiful shapes and colors to be magical and addictive. She is a self-taught ceramist, but finds her education and work experience as a biomedical engineer quite useful. And while results from the kiln can sometimes be unpredictable, she has been experimenting for 15 years now and learns equally from both success and failure.

Originally from Chicago, Leslie has lived in Scottsdale for over 20 years. She enjoys traveling with her family, and is happiest while dreaming up new shapes to sculpt.

I consider loving others to be the core of resistance. Every Valentine’s Day I send handmade Valentines to people I love. The list grows longer every year and includes young and old people, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic and Native American people. Some of the recipients are straight and some identify as LGBTQ+. Seeing a wide variety of people as people to love, not as a frightening ‘other’ is resistance to all the evil that springs from fear and hate. The love I share with people I know through my Valentines reflects the way I live my life.

I have been a nurse for over 30 years and have worked with love for my patients. Not romantic love, but love of action. Nursing is hard work that includes dealing with people from all walks of life who are facing a multitude of health challenges. It is often messy, sometimes smelly, physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. My Valentine for my patients is the way I care about them while I care for them. This painting is a visual representation of sending love into the world.” Lisa Wayman creates work that explores texture and color. She works both in two dimensional work and in fiber art. Her vibrant colors reflect the joy she has in life and is a way to share that joy with others.

Legacy of 45
vanitas painting Oil on board
16 x 20
$900

“Legacy of 45” a vanitas painting, is the culmination of a series of paintings of my personal and shared experiences with COVID 19 during our current president’s first term.  Nothing will bring back those who died while he deliberately downplayed the severity of the virus.  He failed to promote precautions, played politics with governors pleading for medical supplies, and pushed unproven cures.  He boasted about fast-tracking the vaccine, then downplayed that as well.  “Legacy of 45” is the chaos of the first Trump administration and a challenge to do better. We all die. What will you leave behind?

Linda is an award winning fine artist, known for her portrait and still-life paintings.  She has been a member of the Portrait Society of America, Vice President of the Portrait Artists of Arizona, a member of the Arizona Artist’s Guild, Gilbert Visual Art League and presently the Douglas Art Association.  She has a BA in Studio Art from Arizona State and has attended several workshops under master artists at Scottsdale Artists’ School.  She participated in the Artist Infusion Program with the US Mint and designed the Ladybird Johnson First Spouse Gold Coin.

My paintings are attempts to communicate the vision of one human being to another not unlike the paintings the earliest humans made on the walls of their caves. The dynamic relationships among thought and emotion, history and culture, morality has always been a source of motivation and provided the essential themes of my work ” For more than forty years, I worked as a public-school teacher and that experience continues to inform my painting and support of the art community. Both of these pieces were created from the same tattered flag as they express two very different stories, two different possibilities that presented themselves in the 2024 election. As our country continues to grapple for something to be hopeful for, Kris expresses herself through her art. Sometimes messages of joy and comfort come forth, images to find peace. Other times, pieces come together to bear witness to the despair and distrust that can be consuming. Art can speak to the dichotomy of this human existence.

Nancy Hills’ art is in her mastery of the old school letter press. She finds her own voice through the quotes gathered throughout history, words from the wise and poetic prose that inspire people to engage in the world around them.

Her studio is called Hazel and Violet, located at 1301 Grand Ave, Phx. There she teaches workshops, creates notecards and a wide variety of cool merch, and most of all she inspires us to be our best selves. On first Fridays, she will have the press set up with some inspiring quote and allow anyone who wants, to pull their own poster print and take it with them.

She feels like she should be doing more, be out in the streets protesting or something. But when discussing all she does by sharing her work, she said “I can do that, and it’s not nothing!”
