Betsy Aguirre lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. Betsy loves historical architecture and enjoys travel while always searching for scenic inspiration. She started painting with her father and grandfather around the kitchen table when she was a child. Their creativity also centered on the same subjects that interest her now: beautiful landscapes graced with simple architecture. “I paint these beautiful legacy buildings and scenic landscapes to place them in my mind, on paper, and in the viewer’s eyes”. Mixed media artist and photographer, I have learned at the side of other artists, including my parents, and had instruction at the University of California San Francisco, the Art Academy, San Francisco, and Laney College, Oakland. I have been a member of three cooperative galleries and the curator at numerous small galleries. I have been a board member of three art associations and am currently the President Elect for the Arizona Artist Guild in Phoenix. I work in multiple mediums and my passion is to merge and combine different processes, to always be enhancing and exploring my knowledge of a material, then pushing the boundaries of that material. My current focus is exploring abstract, which is both challenging and rewarding.

I have always been making art, working many years doing realistic images as an illustrator and painter. I started focusing on watercolor after taking classes at the University of Arizona, and continued art studies in color and design. My biggest influence has been in Chinese art studies that opened a world of possibilities in expressionist art. I hope you see something new in my work. Member Arizona Watercolor Society, Arizona Artists Guild, Shemer Art Center Splashing in color describes both my process and art. Painting is an adventure — I love experimenting and finding unexpected patterns in color and organic forms. After years of realistic images, I’ve been exploring expression and experimental painting. I have been most influenced by Chinese painting studies, brush work and use of white space as well as techniques like pouring and shabori dying. I hope you see something new in my work.

I am very fortunate. I have always been in the Arts. My Grandmother was a Piano teacher. She taught me the notes. My older Brother oriented me to Classical Music. I played instruments and earned a 4 year Scholarship to the University. I became a Photographer, learned many Art processes and now am a Collagist. I Create every day. The Art I propose to show in this exhibition are all a result of these processes.

John has been an image maker all his adult life.  His colorful and impressionistic style has developed over the last thirty years.  The paintings are his impressions, feelings, and understanding of light, color, texture, motion and style.

What moves John to paint may be as simple as the way the light strikes a scene at hand or the complexities of shapes built into cities, both large and small.

“A painting is nothing more that what the artist deems important and what details, color and shapes are needed to convey the feelings imparted by the subject.”

John graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology BS degree 1971.  1992 Started oil painting to be ready for retirement in 2016.

About his work he states:  I took up oil painting to make sure I had an adequate amount of stress in my life after my retirement from a life long career in photography. So far it has worked wonderfully, the stress that is.  The two mediums have a great deal in common, both can record an image using color and light, composition is required in both, each limited only by imagination.

Julie Gallatig better known to all as “Jules” is a native of Doylestown, PA. A small suburb of Philadelphia. She got her hands into the chemicals and watched the prints develop while working in the darkroom at Solebury School, New Hope, PA (‘93) and fell in love with Photography. Jules went on to study photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with her Bachelors of Fine Art in 1997. Jules was honored in her senior year by having her work accepted into the RIT Photography Honors Show. After college she worked at a small family run portrait studio in Pittsford, NY. Here she gained experience in retouching, posing groups and learned about the industry of photography. In 1999, Jules welcomed her son, Karl into the world and put her energy into raising her kids (Clare, 2001.) Her camera was never far behind as she captured her kids growing up and volunteered photographing at their schools and events. Jules got back behind her camera more as her kids got older. Photographing families, children and traveling with a medical team to Haiti to document their mission. In 2020 she moved to Cave Creek, Arizona to be with her partner John, who she married in 2023. While exploring the desert Jules began finding peace and strength. She started to bring her camera with her and captured the pieces of the desert that presented themselves to her.

I received my BFA from the University of Cincinnati, DAAP program, majoring in painting and then received by MA from Miami University, Oxford, OH. I taught art in both high and college while continuing to expand my own personal art growth. I taught at McNicholas, Badin and Ross High Schools, and developed AP art programs to advance opportunities for my students. I also taught at Brescia University and will teach at Utah State University this summer. Since, retiring I have taught numerous workshop, teaching painting and pastel, and traveled to different locations. I have been involved in many exhibits and am currently a membership of several different professional arts associations. Recently, I have been exploring new styles and techniques in oil painting. This has been a very challenging yet rewarding experience. I have been researching the different subjects and landscapes of this region. It has given me a new perspective and motivated me in ways I haven’t experienced in years. The beauty is awe inspiring, from the rugged mountainous terrain, the breath taking sunsets and the beautiful color canyons; the southwest has much to offer.

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Teresa Prevey is an abstract painter and graphic artist who currently lives and works in Prescott, Arizona. She earned a BA in Fine Arts at the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, and studied life drawing and painting at The Art Students League in New York City. Teresa is a member of several Arizona art associations, and her artwork has been displayed in statewide art exhibitions since 2017. I use the mediums of acrylic paint on canvas to map visual and imaginary realities. For me, abstract painting is a journey to express the deeper visual dimensions of the world around me, and the working process of observation, fabrication and celebration. I want my work to entice the viewer’s eye, and don’t want the viewer to pass by my work without taking a second look.

The “canvas” for this original freehand mandala is a 20.5” diameter cast-off Native American drum, rescued from a yard sale and upcycled into the basis for this piece. Cooling shades of turquoise, aqua, and teal against a background of tanned hide depict refreshing waters on a scorching Arizona summer’s day. Stylized raindrop motifs bring to mind the relief brought by exhilarating monsoonal showers. Just gazing upon these colors makes one feel cooler, doesn’t it?
